What Is Mesothelioma Definations

Mesothelioma (or, more precisely, malignant mesothelioma) is a rare form of cancer that develops from transformed cells originating in the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.[1]

The most common anatomy site for the development of mesothelioma is the pleuraa (the outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it can also arise in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), and the pericardium (the sac that surrounds the heart),[2] or the  tunica vaginalis  (a sac that surrounds the testis).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they inhaled asbestos, or were exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos increases their risk for developing mesothelioma.[3] Unlike lung cancer, there seems to be no association between mesothelioma and tobacco smoking, but smoking greatly increases the risk of other asbestos-induced cancers.[4] Some people who were exposed to asbestos have collected damages for asbestos-related disease, including mesotheliomaThe cost of treating cancer rose 27 percent between 2010 and 2011. Within another decade, costs are projected to reach $158 billion per year – a figure driven mostly by the high costs of conventional therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

As the amount of money being funneled into the research and development of new pharmaceuticals and medical technology approaches $200 billion annually, one would assume that these advanced therapies are able to extend a cancer patient’s life for decades. While some cancers respond very favorably to these new cancer treatments, mesothelioma is fairly resistant to most traditional therapies.

What, then, are mesothelioma patients to do if they don’t want to risk money and further health complications on a conventional treatment that typically increases their prognosis by – at best – a few years?

Most turn to alternative therapies – natural methods of fighting cancer, or natural ways of boosting the body’s own ability to ward off disease.

These approaches are less harsh on the body and rarely create their own set of side effects.

They also tend to be much more economical, with some procedures (such as acupuncture) even qualifying for certain insurance coverage.

Alternative Approaches to Mesothelioma Treatment

Natural methods of treating mesothelioma can work to either relieve the symptoms of the cancer or to enhance the body’s own ability to fight off the tumors.

Nutritional treatments are most commonly used to boost the immune system and cancer-fighting abilities. Supplements, juicing and dietary changes are all praised by mesothelioma survivors for helping them stave off cancerous development

Nutritional remedies include:

Vitamin A, C and K supplements
Herbal supplements such as cat’s claw and astragalus
Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables
Palliative procedures can also be used to naturally treat mesothelioma. These therapies are often based in Eastern medicine and relieve pain, stress and anxiety without any pharmaceuticals.

Some of the most common non-nutritional alternative mesothelioma therapies include acupuncture, massage, yoga and meditation. Many patients combine all or some of these to increase their benefits on the body
